The history of Iranian Natural Stones

Extracting and using natural stones in Iran has a long history. Using these natural stones as building stones or decorative stones was ordinary in the first millennium of formation of civilization in Iran. The remaining vestiges of using natural stones in Persepolis, Pasargadae,. Takht-e Soleymān and many other buildings is.distributed all over the country.

Many Iranian natural stone decorative items made out of Marble. and Onyx used as dishes and jewelry are exhibited in.museums of Iran and other countries . Discoveries also show that these natural stones were. used as interior decoration in buildings.

There are totally 15 billion tons of natural stone resources in the world including Granite, Marble, Onyx and Travertine. 4.7 Million tons of these resources are in Iran, which makes it the fourth country in the world,. but considering color variety and quality,.Iranian natural stones is ranked.first in the world.

In spite of Iran’s ancient civilization and natural stone structures, Iran’s natural stone industry is not that old. The first natural stone cutting factory was built by German experts.and was launched in 1939 in.Iran. It was built to supply needed natural stones for the “Shrine of Imam Reza”,. and shortly after for building Iran Central Bank in Tehran, Bank-e- Sepah Central Branch in Tehran, Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade building, Marble Palace, and so forth.

Years later Mahmoud Abad, Isfahan has become the center and heart of natural stone industry in Iran.
